Intel Enables Cloud-ready Communications Network as Foundation for 5G Network with New Products and Collaborations

By Cloud Computing Outlook | Thursday, May 05, 2016

FREMONT, CA: In order to help the Communication Service Providers (CSPs) transition to a cloud-ready communications network by addressing the demand for new telecommunications, cloud and data center services and laying the foundation for future 5G networks, Intel announces expansion of its Xeon processor D-1500 product family and new Intel Ethernet controllers. Intel’s collaboration with companies such as America Movil, Cisco, SK Telecom, Verizon, and Red Hat will assist in restructuring of networks that delivers unprecedented flexibility and agility.

Intel’s new products and collaborations include:

Collaboration with America Movil and Red Hat

Intel collaborates with America Movil, a mobile network operator to upgrade its network functions as a technology partner. With this collaboration, Intel will provide valuable assistance to America Movil to achieve a more flexible, efficient and scalable network that will accelerate the launch of new services, automate its processes and reduce network operation costs in Latin America and Europe.

In the past, Red Hat and Intel together have delivered standard-based solutions to the telecommunications industry. Now by taking their collaboration a step further, they will be delivering solutions   based on Red Hat’s software and Intel’s technology. Jointly, the companies will also develop blueprints for communications networking use cases and perform interoperability testing of their platforms with other ecosystem solutions.

Xeon processor D-1500

The Intel Xeon processor D-1500 product family brings the performance and advanced intelligence of Intel Xeon processors into a dense, lower-power system-on-a-chip. With enhanced reliability, availability, and serviceability features, platform storage extensions, and built-in hardware virtualization, the eight new processors of Intel Xeon processor D-1500 product family offer high-performance, low-power and twice the maximum memory of previous generations to support operations of various networking, cloud storage, enterprise storage and IoT applications in rugged environments.

Ethernet Multi-host Controller FM10000

The Intel Ethernet Multi-host Controller FM10000 family combines Intel’s proven Ethernet Controller technology with advanced switch resources in a multi-host controller device. It is intended for high-density rack scale server platforms and high-performance communications infrastructure applications. With up to 200 Gbps of high-bandwidth multi-host connectivity and multiple 100 Gigabit Ethernet ports, the new controller supports enhanced features critical for high-performance server environments such as flexible high-bandwidth interfaces, low latency, advanced frame processing, and support for Data Plan Development Kit (DPDK) acceleration enhancements.

Ethernet Controller X550

The Intel Ethernet Controller X550 Family is the low cost, low-power, single-chip 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity solution that triggers the performance of data center servers and network appliances.

To increase ecosystem alignment and build a strong and sustainable market advantage for all the members through solution-centered ecosystem collaboration based on Intel architecture, the company announced the Intel Network Builders Fast Track program in August this year. With Red Hat being the first ISV to contribute actively in the program, the network ecosystem created by Intel has expanded with more than 180 companies participating in the initiative.

Intel Network Builders program is an ecosystem of independent software vendors (ISVs), operating system vendors (OSVs), original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs), system integrators and carriers, coming together to accelerate the network transformation with the development and deployment of proven software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) solutions for telecom and data center networks.

"Networks are facing extraordinary demands as more devices become connected and new digital services are offered. Building intelligence throughout the communications infrastructure and using a standards-based approach offers service providers the foundation to build agile, cloud-ready networks that allow them to expand their services capabilities," says Sandra Rivera, vice president, Data Center Group and general manager, Network Platforms Group, Intel.
