Running workloads in the cloud bring down the operational costs to a large extent. Still, there are a number of ways that can be followed to further optimize cloud spending and lower the costs

FREMONT, CA: Most organizations prefer to run their workloads in the cloud, which is more cost-effective than in an on-premise. Running workloads in the cloud bring down the operational costs to a large extent. Still, there are a number of ways that can be followed to further optimize cloud spending and lower the costs effectually.

Here are some useful tips explained to develop good habits in cloud cost management.

Lay-off Unused Resources

Running virtual servers, databases, and other cloud services, even when they are no longer in use, is an obvious waste of money and resources. Most of the cloud providers charge money based on how long a server runs, and not on how much work is done. Hence, a company may end up paying unnecessary costs for those services which are not in use. Therefore it is advised to close down the resources which are not in use.

Choose Storage Tiers Wisely

The public cloud providers offer different storage options, with different features and prices that vary according to the storage capacities and speed. Usually, the lower the cloud storage cost, the lower the capacity and speed of transferring data. The data, which need not be accessed frequently, like backups and document archives should be stored in the low-priced tiers. Organizations must know about all the tiers and their features before exporting their data to those storage devices. Exporting unnecessary data to a high-priced tier is a waste of money.

Automation in Scale

Different workloads require different services over the cloud. Sometimes the organization may be handling enormous data, and sometimes, only a handful. During the high and low use of data, it is essential to scale the use of cloud management accordingly to evade the risk of paying higher charges unnecessarily. Cloud providers give the option of automated scaling that allows the workloads to access more cloud resources when necessary. This also scales back the resources when not in use. Automation can establish a low usage profile by default while also meeting the periods of higher demand.
