Storage upgrades should not completely be misunderstood as capacity upgrades. Capacity upgrades are one among those numerous ways to upgrade storage, apart from which there are other ways, which we discuss in this article

Fremont, CA: Businesses must realize that the current storage they have will eventually become inadequate and outdated. It is also crucial to understand that the storage used to serve mission-critical workloads, which are in constant use, cannot be taken offline for upgrades. This puts a big question mark on the top members of the organizations as to how smoothly upgrade the storage? Fortunately, there are a few ways that can show businesses a path towards a non-disruptive upgrade.

Storage upgrades should not completely be misunderstood as capacity upgrades. Capacity upgrades are one among those numerous ways to upgrade storage, apart from which there are other ways, which we discuss in this article.

Replacements of Storage Controller

Sometimes the replacement of the storage controller may seem to be an area of concern as the storage controller can be taken offline to replace it with a newer version, as in the case of updating its firmware offline. Still, there are a few things that need to be considered. First, businesses must ensure whether the storage controller is backward compatible or not, i.e., can they be replaced with a new model, can it go offline, and again be brought down online? Some vendors still consider storage upgradation as migration. Hence, it is important to check which adoption path the vendors are following. Another crucial thing that businesses must consider and ensure is, the new storage controller continues to recognize the logical disk structure that is currently in use.

Migrations of Data

The non-disruptive data migration is the most sought after option of non-disruptive storage upgrades. At least a few years ago, the non-disruptive migrations of anything other than unsettled systems were difficult. Today, there are a number of storage vendors who provide viable solutions for migrating live storage with minimum impact on performance.

Upgrades of Disk Firmware

Businesses must also ensure whether or not they can perform a non-disruptive firmware upgrade on the actual disks. Presently, many storage vendors permit non-disruptive firmware upgrades for SSDs, but the support for HDDs has not yet been received.
